First, a Portland hairdresser complained. Then, the state investigated. Now, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has directed the company that makes Brazilian Blowout — a high-end hair smoother sold in salons and online worldwide — to quit misleading customers and misbranding its product as “formaldehyde free.”
In a warning letter to Mike Brady, chief executive officer of GIB, the North Hollywood, Calif., company that sells Brazilian Blowout, the FDA says the product contains methylene glycol, the liquid form of formaldehyde, at levels that could endanger users.
